Daiane Lopes da Silva (KINITECH / Kinetech Arts), for Robert Moses' Kin

A fast-paced quintet built on the Markov chain, a mathematical model: a computer decides in real time which set phrases the dancers perform, so each performance unfolds differently. It was created by KINITECH's Daiane Lopes da Silva for Robert Moses' Kin's BY Series, with an original score by Ben.

Premiere
2015-06-18
Venue
ODC Theater (Robert Moses' Kin 'BY Series')
Where
San Francisco, CA
Performances
June 18-21, 2015, ODC Theater (Thu-Sat 8pm, Sun 2pm), on Robert Moses' Kin's BY Series program with Amy Foley's 'Loom' and works by Robert Moses ('Draft' and a new piece). An earlier showing appears to have taken place around May 27, 2015 (Ben allowed the music to be used 'tonight'). Kinetech Arts later presented 'State Space 2' ('The Markov Chain Experiment') at Dance Mission Theater, Nov 13-14, 2015; whether it used Ben's music is not known.
Credits
Choreography: Daiane Lopes da Silva (KINITECH, with scientist-partner Weidong Yang). Performed by a quintet of Robert Moses' Kin dancers; the SF Chronicle review indicates the same five as in Amy Foley's 'Loom' (Norma Fong, Brendan Barthel, Victor Talledos, Crystaldawn Bell, Katherine Disenhof), with Disenhof replaced by a dancer the review names as Kristen Bell. Music: Ben Juodvalkis (pre-recorded score with cue claps). Lighting (BY Series): David K. H. Elliott. RMK staff: Norma Fong (production), Jay-Marie Hill (administration).

Press

“The score by Ben Juodvalkis and the lighting by David K.H. Elliott are helpful, to a point.”

“State Space looks like a game of individuality versus efficiency.”
